The Security Service and the National Police detained two drug addicts who worked for Russian special services and committed arson attacks in Cherkasy.

The priority targets of the enemy were official pick-up trucks of the Defence Forces and Ukrzaliznytsia facilities, the Security Service of Ukraine reports.

Within one day, the suspects set fire to two Armed Forces off-road vehicles and a relay cabinet near the main railway line.

According to the investigation, one of the attackers was an IDP from Lysychansk in Luhansk Region who had settled in Cherkasy Region, and the other was a local resident.

"Both of them are drug addicts who wanted to ‘make a quick buck’ on Telegram channels. There, they received a response from a representative of the Russian Federation, who offered them ‘easy money’ in exchange for cooperation. To commit the crime, the offenders bought petrol and a flammable mixture," the statement said.

SBU CI detained both criminals in hot pursuit. During the searches, the SBU seized a mobile phone used in subversive activities in favour of Russia.

According to the investigation, after completing three ‘test’ tasks from the occupiers, the defendants were to continue a series of arsons.

They have been served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 28 and Part 1 of Art. 114-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations, committed by a group of JFO). The offenders are in custody. They face up to 8 years in prison.

In addition, the issue of additional qualification of the criminal actions of the defendants under Part 2 of Art. 113 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (sabotage committed under martial law) is being decided.
