The Russian drone that crashed in Latvia was a Shahed drone and contained explosives. The UAV was used to attack Ukraine.
This was stated by the National Armed Forces of Latvia, LSM+ reports.
The commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš, said that the Latvian army, in cooperation with NATO partners, was monitoring the situation.
It is known that the drone went down in the Gaigalava parish of the Rezekne Region. The UAV has been identified as a Shahed attack drone.
Kalniņš noted that the explosives that the drone was packed with did not detonate. The drone was neutralised by an Navy unit.
It is not yet known whether the drone landed on its own or crashed. All material evidence has been collected and an in-depth analysis of the drone's components is underway.
After a detailed analysis, Latvian Defence Minister Andris Spruds confirmed that the drone was directed against Ukraine. He stated that it was an extraordinary event. In response to the incident, Latvia is already strengthening its air defence on the eastern border.
