Memorial to commemorate tragedy of Crimean Tatars unveiled in Kyiv on site of former Chekists' park

The opening took place as part of the fourth Crimean Platform Summit.

A Ukrainian national memorial commemorating the tragedy of the Crimean Tatar people has been unveiled in Kyiv. The unveiling took place during the fourth Crimean Platform Summit

In addition to Ukrainian officials, the event was attended by Ukrainian defenders, the President of Lithuania, the Prime Minister of Latvia, the Prime Minister of Croatia, the President of the Czech Senate, the Speaker of the Parliament of Moldova, and representatives of the diplomatic corps. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

"Until recently, this was the square of the KGB. And there is no need to tell who they are. Your countries know and remember their terrible crimes," the President said.

The memorial is dedicated to commemorating the genocide of the Crimean Tatars. It will be a symbol of the fact that tyrants will certainly be defeated. 

"Crimea is Ukraine. And we must move forward until the strangers leave our home," the President said.

The leader of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev added that the memorial is not only dedicated to the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people, but also reminds us of the kind of neighbour we have to live with.

"For 10 years now, the residents of Crimea have been in the clutches of the successors and followers of the regime that committed the mass genocide of the Crimean Tatar people," he was quoted as saying on the president's website. 

  • Western politicians arrived in Kyiv to take part in the Crimean Platform, including Czech Senate President Milos Vystrčil, President Gitanas Nausėda and Lithuanian Prime Minister Ewika Silina.
