Roksolana Pidlasa, chairwoman of the Verkhovna Rada Budget Committee, has said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is against the emission (putting new banknotes into circulation) of the hryvnia.
She said this today, 18 September, speaking to journalists in the Verkhovna Rada.
‘Our international partners - first of all, the International Monetary Fund - are categorically against the issue or printing of the Ukrainian hryvnia,’ Pidlasa said.
She noted that Ukraine has very specific conditions under which the country can afford for the NBU to buy government bonds issued by the government and thus print the hryvnia. And this case is spelled out in the memorandum with the IMF, in its closed part. It says that Ukraine should have a gap in the flow of international aid.
‘That is, now that there is no gap, I don't think we can use this method this year. The government is counting on commercial banks to be ready to buy enough government securities, i.e. to lend money to the government so that we can finance all expenditures by the end of the year,’ explained Pidlasa.
