Today, 1 January 2025, Ukraine has stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory.
This was reported by the Ministry of Energy.
"At 07:00, in the interests of national security, the transportation of Russian natural gas through the territory of Ukraine was stopped. Ukraine has informed its international partners in accordance with the established procedure," the statement said.
Since 1 January, Ukraine's gas transmission system has been operating in a zero-transit mode for Russian gas. The gas transmission system infrastructure has been prepared in advance to operate in a zero-transit mode and ensure reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets and will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made a decision to refuse Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU envisages exactly what Ukraine has done today," added Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.
- Recently, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that the resumption of transit would only be possible if, at the request of the European Commission, we transport non-Russian gas through our system.
- Before that, in Brussels, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine would not continue to transit Russian gas.
