Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office, Donald Trump said he had made “significant progress” in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war in recent days.
According to Yevropeyska Pravda, when asked about the European “nuclear umbrella”, the US President told the press that he would like to “bring the two together so that we don’t have to talk about nuclear weapons”.
He added that “it would be great if everybody got rid of nuclear weapons” and cited statistics showing that the United States and Russia have the most warheads, while China “will have the same in four to five years”. Trump called for denuclearisation, stating that “the power of nuclear weapons is insane”.
The head of state also commented on reports regarding the potential revocation of the special status of Ukrainian refugees. According to Ukrinform, Trump said he “will soon make a decision on this issue” but “does not want to cause pain or harm to anyone, because Ukrainians have already gone through so much”.
- During his speech to both houses of Congress, Trump devoted only about a minute to Ukraine, without presenting any “peace plan”.
