The attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the ammunition depot at the Engels-2 strategic airbase in Russia demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukrainian strikes on military infrastructure in the deep rear of Russia.
This is stated in an intelligence report by the UK Ministry of Defence, Radio Svoboda reports.
‘This strike is Ukraine's most successful attack on a Russian ammunition depot in 2025 and continues a series of regular strikes by the Ukrainian Air Force deep into Russian territory. It also highlights the ongoing tension faced by Russia's stretched air defences in defending its strategic military installations,’ the statement said.
The intelligence agency reminded that on the night of 20 March, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked an ammunition depot at Russia's Engels-2 strategic airbase, which is about 600 km from the Ukrainian border, with drones.
According to preliminary data, the base was used to store aircraft munitions used in strikes against Ukraine.
‘The attack caused significant losses to the Russians, which is likely to temporarily disrupt Russian strike operations from this base and force the Kremlin to strengthen its defences and replenish its stocks,’ the intelligence service said.
