The United States will no longer serve as a mediator in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides must now reach an agreement independently.
This statement was made by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce during a briefing.
She noted that the State Department is altering its approach to the negotiation process.
“The essence of the changes is that we will no longer be flying around the world at the drop of a hat to hold meetings and mediate. We are still committed to engagement — we are ready to help in any way we can — but now it all depends on the parties to the conflict,” Bruce explained.
She added that “there are other regions in the world that need attention”.
“The Secretary of State [Marco Rubio] also made it clear that while our style will be different, the way we will engage in this process will also change. We will no longer play the role of mediator,” the spokesperson added.
- Earlier, US President Donald Trump called on Russia and Ukraine to begin negotiations as soon as possible.
