The diplomatic track involving the United States remains on hold. For now, Ukraine is awaiting a visit by the American negotiating team, Ukraine’s foreign minister Andriy Sybiga said at a briefing held during the visit of Azerbaijan’s foreign minister.
He said Ukraine welcomes U.S. efforts and wants greater momentum and engagement from the American side. Sybiha emphasised that there will be no just peace without U.S. participation.
“Just as it is difficult to imagine realistic, effective security guarantees without the American side. All of this was the subject of talks between President Zelenskyy and President Trump during the recent trip to Washington,” he said.
The head of the ministry stressed that Ukraine wants to end the war and is using every opportunity to bring a just peace closer.
Talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia
Last year and this year, Ukraine, Russia, and the United States held several rounds of talks. They resulted in several stages of prisoner exchanges, but it was not possible to resolve all contentious issues. Russia is demanding that Ukraine hand over the occupied territories as well as the parts of Donetsk and Luhansk Regions that remain under Ukrainian control. Ukraine categorically rejects any territorial concessions.
The meetings were suspended after the start of a U.S. and Israeli operation against Iran. The most recent talks took place in February in Geneva.
One of the key negotiators, Steve Witkoff, has repeatedly traveled to Moscow. The President of Ukraine called such visits to the capital of the aggressor state—and the absence of trips to Kyiv—a sign of disrespect.
