Zelenskyy: I will wait for Putin in Turkey on Thursday

“We expect a full and lasting ceasefire from tomorrow to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine expects a full ceasefire. He also stated that he would meet with Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday.

Zelenskyy made this announcement on Telegram.

“We expect a full and lasting ceasefire from tomorrow to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in continuing the killings. And I will wait for Putin in Turkey on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for reasons why they cannot do that,” Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine should immediately agree to Putin’s proposal to meet on Thursday in Turkey. He noted that, at the very least, the parties would be able to determine whether a deal is possible — and if not, European leaders and the US “will know where things stand and can act accordingly”.

  • Putin said he “proposes to resume direct talks without any additional conditions” next Thursday, 15 May, in Istanbul.
  • President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to Putin’s statement on the resumption of direct ceasefire talks and confirmed that Ukraine was ready for a meeting.
  • Turkish President Erdogan also accepted the proposal to hold talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul.
