Ukrainian historical documents with English-language annotations are now available on the Archives of Europe portal. This development was announced by the Head of the State Archival Service, Anatoliy Khromov, during a press conference held at the Ukrinform news agency.
At present, the National Archival Fond of Ukraine holds 100 million archival items, of which 450 are classified as unique. This status indicates that these materials possess special historical and legal significance.
“I would add that they emphasise the contribution of the Ukrainian people to the world’s cultural heritage,” Khromov stated.
Since 2020, the Ukrainian State Archive has been a participant in the Archives of Europe portal project. Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers, Oleksandr Yarema, underlined the importance of this development: “We are becoming part of a single European archival space. The opportunity for anyone, from anywhere in Europe or the world, to access our historical documents is extremely valuable. It is valuable to be able to see these documents and read annotations, including in English. Accordingly, you are convinced of such an ancient, deep history of Ukraine,” he said.
The Archives of Europe portal is a digital platform that integrates descriptive records from over 30 countries and in more than 20 languages. The portal was established with the support of the European Commission between 2009 and 2012. Today, it includes information on more than 7,000 archival institutions and over 280 million archival descriptive units.
