Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has described the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to withdraw its recommendation restricting the participation of Russian athletes as "an alarming signal" for the international community.
This was stated by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It called on governments hosting international sporting events to prevent the display of Russian state symbols on their territory.
"Under this flag, Russia continues its unprovoked war against Ukraine. Civilians are killed every day and Ukrainian cities are being destroyed. The symbols of the aggressor state cannot become part of a sporting celebration," the ministry said.
"The Olympic Movement is founded on the values of peace, respect for human dignity and responsibility. We therefore hope that the issue of the use of Russian state symbols during the Olympic Games will be considered separately," it added.
The ministry also urged international sports federations to maintain the existing restrictions on representatives of the aggressor state.
"Ukraine will continue working with its international partners to defend these principles and prevent world sport from being used to legitimise aggression," the statement said.
The IOC has temporarily withdrawn all of its recommendations restricting Russian athletes. Decisions on whether to allow the Russian flag, anthem or competitions to be held in Russia will now be left to individual international sports federations.
