The English translation of Maksym Kryvtsov’s debut poetry collection, Poems From the Embrasure, has received support through the English PEN’s PEN Translates grant programme.
The translation from Ukrainian is being done by Larysa Babiy and Helena Kernan. The book will be published by Jantar Publishing.
Maksym Kryvtsov was a Ukrainian poet and serviceman. He was killed on 7 January 2024, a few weeks after the release of Poems From the Embrasure.
The PEN Translates programme was founded in 2012 with support from Arts Council England to encourage British publishers to buy more books in other languages. The award helps British publishers cover the costs of translating new works into English, while also ensuring recognition and fair pay for translators.
PEN Translates has already supported more than 400 books translated from over 90 languages, awarding grants totalling more than £1.2 million.
Books for PEN Translates awards are selected on the basis of outstanding literary quality, the strength of the publishing project, and their contribution to the UK’s bibliodiversity.
