Overnight on 29 August, Russia attacked Odesa, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kherson, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Donetsk and Chernihiv regions. In effect, there were almost continuous strikes by jet-powered drones on Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
He believes Ukraine cannot be left to find solutions on its own to protect against such strikes. The President also commented on the Russian strike on Bucha district after which ammunition began detonating.
“Since the evening, work has been ongoing in the village of Myla near Kyiv to deal with the aftermath of a Russian drone strike. On-site headquarters have been set up to help people. All necessary services have been deployed. State Emergency Service units are working — more than 300 personnel. There was a strike on a warehouse followed by detonation. Unfortunately, there is significant damage to surrounding infrastructure: residential buildings, a care home for elderly people and people with disabilities have been damaged,” he said.
As of the morning, 27 casualties are known, including the death of the head of the Dmytrivka territorial community, Taras Didych, who arrived at the strike site to rescue people. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a pre-trial investigation; criminal proceedings have been opened under an article on official negligence.
“There are rules: ammunition cannot be stored next to houses or other residential development. Appropriate conclusions will definitely be drawn,” Zelenskyy said.
The Prime Minister and the Interior Minister reported on the situation. Zelenskyy said that those who allowed such consequences must be held accountable for their decisions.
Strike on Bucha District
On 28 August, on the second day of uninterrupted drone terror in the capital region, the Russians attacked a production facility in Bucha district. After the strike, detonation began. As of the morning, efforts to deal with the aftermath are continuing. Twenty-seven casualties are known, but the number may rise, the head of the Regional Military Administration reported. Forty-two people were injured.
This is already the second similar incident in Kyiv region in recent times. In July, following a strike on Vyshneve, there was a large-scale detonation at a defence enterprise. The explosions destroyed entire streets, with fatalities and injuries.
Against the backdrop of the tragedy, the head of Ukroboronprom was dismissed. The investigation is ongoing.
