On the night of 9 September 2026, operators from the Active Operations Department of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, within a joint deepstrike operation with the Defence Forces of Ukraine, struck infrastructure at Russia’s naval base in Novorossiysk. The Russian Project 11356 frigate Admiral Essen was also hit.
This was reported by the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
As a result of the accurate strikes, a fire broke out on the deck superstructure of the Russian frigate Admiral Essen.
Admiral Essen is a missile carrier capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles. Russia regularly uses such missiles to strike Ukraine’s civilian and critical infrastructure.
- The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine recalled that in August 2026 Ukrainian intelligence officers and the Defence Forces had already struck the Russian missile carriers Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov, as well as the patrol ship Vasiliy Bykov.
- On the night of 9 September the Defence Forces of Ukraine carried out a comprehensive strike on the Novorossiysk naval base in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai. As a result of the attack, the Russian side lost a number of military vessels, including missile carriers.
