On the night of 10 September, units of Ukraine’s Defence Forces struck the Makhachkala Sea Trade Port in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. A fire was recorded on the facility’s premises.
This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The extent of the damage to the port infrastructure is currently being уточнюють.
The General Staff noted that the Makhachkala Sea Trade Port is Russia’s only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea. It is also an important transport and logistics hub.
In addition, the General Staff confirmed the strike on 9 September on fuel oil storage facilities in Novorossiysk, Krasnodar Krai. Following an analysis of additional data, it was established that at least three Russian ships were hit.
This concerns the small minesweeper Zheleznyakov, the frigate Admiral Essen, and the large landing ship of Project 11711 Pyotr Morgunov.
“Work on the enemy’s key military targets continues,” the General Staff stressed.
- The port of Makhachkala is of key importance for the Russian-Iranian logistics corridor across the Caspian Sea, which is used to обходу western sanctions. This route is used to deliver military supplies in both directions.
- In particular, components and Shahed-type strike drones are delivered from Iran to Russia via this corridor. In the opposite direction, Russia supplies Iran with explosives, drone components, and ammunition.
- A base of Russia’s Caspian Flotilla is also located near the port of Makhachkala.
