The European Commission is looking for new, larger premises in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. This is linked to the EU’s expanding work in the Arctic region and plans to invest €200m in Greenland.

The European Commission’s current office in Greenland was opened in 2024 during a visit by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The European Commission now plans to increase the number of staff in Greenland to ensure the effective use of European funds earmarked for the Arctic region. In this context, EU representatives are looking for larger premises in Nuuk.
However, the Commission has not yet found a new office to accommodate the additional staff.
According to Euractiv, more than 40,000 of the EU’s roughly 80,000 civil servants live in Brussels. That is almost as many as Greenland’s entire population, which stands at about 56,000 people.
At the same time, the diplomatic presence of other countries on the island is also increasing. This year, France and Canada opened their diplomatic missions in Greenland.
