Near Dobropillia in Donetsk Region, Russian troops executed two captured servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine. An investigation has been launched into the alleged war crime.
This was reported by the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
“Under the procedural supervision of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation has been opened in criminal proceedings into the commission of a war crime that resulted in loss of life (Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” the agency said in a statement.
According to the investigation, on 2 September 2026 two National Guard servicemen were at a firing position in a forest belt near Dobropillia.
The Ukrainian defenders were carrying out a combat mission when, according to preliminary information, they were captured by Russian troops. Subsequently, Russian Armed Forces personnel executed the captives by shooting them with automatic weapons.
Prosecutors are currently conducting urgent investigative and search measures. Law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the incident and identifying those among Russian servicemen involved in committing the crime.
The killing of prisoners of war is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a serious international crime.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the SBU’s Main Directorate in Donetsk and Luhansk Regions.
