President Volodymyr Zelensky, on the 25th anniversary of the 11 September attacks in the United States in 2001, honoured the memory of those killed and stressed the need to respond to terrorism.
He wrote about this on his social media.
"Today is an important day – a day of strong people – and at the same time a deeply tragic one. Twenty-five years ago, on 11 September, people were struck. A terrible blow, a tragedy in the United States of America. Nearly 3,000 people from 90 countries around the world were killed, including Ukrainians. Honour to all the heroes who then did everything to save the lives of others. Police officers and firefighters, and simply caring people, among them those of Ukrainian origin. We express our tribute, respect and condolences," the statement said.
He also stressed NATO’s role in responding to the 11 September attacks and the invocation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
According to Zelensky, this example shows that states must respond to terrorism if they seek to protect their civilisation, rights, freedoms and values.
"Because evil must be punished," the president concluded.
- In Manhattan, New York, a memorial event was held to mark another anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked commercial aircraft and flew them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
