The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has published details of a new modification of the Russian Geran-4 drones. According to intelligence, the Russian forces began using the new versions of the jet-powered UAVs in the autumn of this year.
The upgraded Geran-4, in particular, includes a new MOH unit, based on a high-precision magneto-inductive sensor (magnetometer) PNI5GA made by PNI Sensor (USA). The MOH works together with the SADRA inertial navigation module and reduces drift in its gyroscopes, improving the accuracy of the UAV’s autonomous navigation.
In addition, alongside satellite and inertial navigation, the adversary has added another autonomous navigation system, Susanin. This is an opto-electronic correlation system that compares images from an optical sensor with a reference image loaded into the computer’s memory, to ensure the UAV’s route matches from the launch point to the aiming point. A similar system is also used on the new ‘Geran-5’ UAVs in the K5 version.
To effectively strike (cut through with a shaped-charge jet) bridge structures and overhead power line pylons, the adversary has begun using a new warhead, KRSN — a shaped-charge cutting special payload.
Replacing the Chinese Telefly turbojet engine is a locally produced analogue manufactured in Alabuga.
The remaining electronic units and components have remained unchanged and identical to previous Geran models.
