Latvian Member of the European Parliament Rihards Kols said he had signed a joint letter calling on the EU’s leadership to maintain an unwavering stance in support of Ukraine and to completely halt imports of Russian energy.
In the letter, MEPs insist on a total ban on Russian gas and oil, as well as the development of a new sanctions package. The authors note that Moscow is counting on Europe’s fatigue and a return to the former business relationship, so the EU must deprive the Kremlin of both financial resources and any hope of avoiding accountability.
I’ve co-signed letter calling on EU leaders to hold firm on Ukraine and impose a full embargo on Russian oil and gas. Moscow is counting on Europe to tire and resume business. We must deny it both the revenue and the prospect of escaping accountability. https://t.co/suHoUOSLSF

The parliamentarians demand that restrictions against Russia be maintained until a lasting peace is established and accountability is ensured for war crimes, including the payment of reparations to Ukraine.
In addition, the letter calls on European leaders not to follow the path of US President Donald Trump’s initiatives on the so-called “energy truce”, but to adhere to a principled position of supporting Ukraine until its complete victory.
- Recently, the United States and Russia agreed on an initial supply of more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel for the American and global markets. US President Donald Trump explained the decision as an effort to bring down energy prices in the United States.
