In Poland, a cadet at the Military Medical Academy in Łódź, who holds both Polish and Ukrainian citizenship, has been detained. The man is suspected of espionage.
This was reported by the Polish outlet Rmf24.
The detention was carried out by the Military Gendarmerie on the instructions of the Łódź-Polesie District Prosecutor’s Office. Poland’s Military Counterintelligence Service was also involved in the investigation.
Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, Cezary Tomczyk, confirmed the detention.
"I can confirm that a student of the Military Medical Academy was detained. He clearly presented himself as someone who was conducting reconnaissance of certain Polish Army facilities," Tomczyk said.
According to Rzeczpospolita, during the detention several mobile phones, documents, stamps, a significant amount of cash in various currencies, and gold were seized from the man.
Tomczyk noted that the detainee had shown interest in military facilities across the country. At the same time, he stressed that the circumstances of the case are still under investigation and that the espionage allegation must be proven. He added that, as part of the investigation, Polish services may also contact the Ukrainian side.
The deputy minister added that over the past three years Polish services have detained 50 people suspected of diversionary activities and acts of sabotage.
