On Sunday evening, US President Donald Trump said that Norway “is a dump”, once again voicing his outrage that he has repeatedly been overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Despite starting a war with Iran and toppling Venezuela’s leader, Trump has actively touted his peacemaking achievements, claiming that during his second term he has settled at least eight conflicts,” the outlet notes.
The Nobel Committee, based in Oslo, chose other candidates twice: in 2025, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, and in 2026, South African lawyer Navi Pillay, recognising her efforts to advance peace and international law.
“And what about me? Did they do those two things? Well, I’m not thrilled with Norway. Frankly, Norway is a dump. In fact, Norway has turned into a shithole country,” the US president said during a speech at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan.
Trump was talking about immigration to the United States when he suddenly switched to criticising Norway.
“We work with Denmark — it’s a good, wonderful country. If someone from Denmark wants to come to our country, I’m all for it. But I have to say, when it comes to Somalia… I’ve had enough. I’ve had enough of them. Denmark is a completely different matter — we’ll take them. But Sweden, Norway… unlikely. Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize, even though I’m the one who put an end to the conflict. So I don’t want anyone from Norway. I don’t want anything to do with Norway,” Trump said.
It is worth noting that in 2025, Machado, during a meeting at the White House in January this year, presented him with her Nobel medal. At the same time, the Nobel Committee explained that the laureate title remains with the winner, even if the medal is handed to someone else. Former Norwegian Foreign Ministry state secretary Janne Haaland Matlary called the transfer of the “Nobel Peace Prize” to Trump “a pathetic act”.
- Earlier, Trump called Norway a “stain” over the Nobel Peace Prize, and described members of the prize committee as “enemies of civilisation”.
