Ukraine and Romania plan to deepen cooperation in the energy sector. This includes developing electricity and gas connections between the two countries.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal reported this.

According to him, during the first online meeting with Romania’s Energy Minister Dumitru Chisăliță, the sides discussed the region’s energy security and the implementation of joint projects.

One of the key issues was the development of electricity interconnectors between Ukraine and Romania. This concerns nearly 1GW of additional transmission capacity. The sides discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in this area.

They also discussed fuel supply logistics. Denys Shmyhal informed his Romanian counterpart about Ukraine’s proposals and work to increase the capacity of border crossing points and open new routes for transit.

Special attention was paid to the use of the Vertical and Trans-Balkan gas corridors and the development of new interconnectors.

Ukraine values Romania’s role in implementing the roadmap for the Trans-Balkan route, in particular in introducing more competitive tariff conditions.

Ukraine also expects Romanian companies to be interested in storing part of their gas in Ukrainian gas storage facilities as part of developing the Vertical Corridor.

The sides agreed to work together to establish cooperation between Ukrainian and Romanian companies in gas production and field development.

Denys Shmyhal thanked Romania for its support for Ukraine and practical cooperation in strengthening energy security.
