The US Federal Bureau of Investigation said North Korea was behind the theft of cryptocurrency assets worth more than $6 billion from the Binance exchange.

This was stated in an FBI statement.

According to the agency, the cyberattack was carried out by hackers from the North Korean group TraderTraitor.

The FBI said the perpetrators are converting the stolen assets mainly into Ethereum. They may then launder the funds through decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms and instant exchange services.

US law enforcement urged THORChain node operators, RPC providers, exchange services, DeFi platforms, blockchain analytics firms and other virtual asset service providers to block transactions involving addresses used by the hackers. The FBI also published a list of these addresses.

As Reuters reports, on Saturday evening the Binance cryptocurrency exchange announced a phased resumption of withdrawals after tokens worth $6.3 billion were stolen from its platform. The company said it has already secured 95% of the stolen assets.

The first stage of the resumption of withdrawals will begin on Sunday between 06:00 and 09:00 GMT. It will cover Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin and other tokens.

Binance noted that the remaining 5% of the stolen assets consists of less liquid tokens. As a result, finding the required amount of these assets may take longer.
