Cyberattacks on the information resources of Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) have been ongoing since 29 October, Radio Liberty reports.
Rosstat’s website is currently unavailable.
The outlet reports that earlier hackers posted a message in Belarusian on the site: “No one will escape responsibility.” The same messages appeared on the pages of the agency’s regional offices.
The hacked site also displayed the logos of the hacker groups “Cyber Partisans BY” and Silent Crow. The latter said it had “compromised and destroyed Rosstat’s internal IT infrastructure”.
There is no independent confirmation of the scale of the alleged damage.
According to hackers from Silent Crow, they managed to gain access to about 25,000 computers, including systems at the agency’s central office, regional units and the Main Interregional Centre for Processing and Dissemination of Statistical Information.
Those behind the attack claim they stole around 23 terabytes of data, including internal documents; databases containing statistical, economic and personal information; population census materials; and information on Russian army losses in the war against Ukraine. About two terabytes are said to consist of documents for official use.
