Scoop of the day: Schools in Ukraine to take break because of Covid-19

Coronavirus

The secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Oleksiy Danilov, has said that during the peak of the coronavirus epidemic in Ukraine, the death rate may exceed 1,000 people per day.

Speaking at a briefing following a meeting of the National Security and Defence Council on 22 October, he said that if the country does not reach the rate of 350,000-400,000 vaccinations per day, "we will have a very, very big problem".

The Education Ministry has decided to announce an autumn break in most educational institutions as of Monday, 25 October, due to the spread of Covid-19.

In Kyiv, the authorities decided that the break would begin on 23 October.

The Ukrainian Health Ministry said 614 people died of Covid-19 on 21 October, making it the highest daily death toll over the entire pandemic period.

There were 23,785 new Covid-19 cases registered that day.

Energy

The secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Oleksiy Danilov, has said that certain oligarchs may be involved in sabotaging the creation of a full energy balance in Ukraine.

"We believe they may have had something to do with the fact that such a fundamental document has not yet appeared in our country," Danilov said.

Gas

The secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Oleksiy Danilov, has said that Ukraine will help Moldova with gas supplies in response to a request by Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita.

"The Ukrainian prime minister received a letter from his colleague asking for help with gas supply to avoid a difficult situation given the blackmail in which Gazprom is currently engaged there," Danilov explained.

Later, the NSDC secretary clarified that the terms of the agreement envisioned the transfer of a certain volume of gas to Moldova with its subsequent return. According to him, this should be done because Ukraine and Moldova are interconnected and some territories in Ukraine consume gas from Moldova.

Donbas

One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded and another sustained combat injury amid nine ceasefire violations by Russia-backed militants, the Joint Forces Operation HQ has said.

During one of the shellings, militants targeted Krasnohorivka with 120-mm mortars and 100-mm artillery.

Supreme Court

The plenum of the Supreme Court elected by secret ballot Vsevolod Knyazec a new chairman of the Supreme Court. He is the secretary of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court.

Crime

Ex-MP Nadiya Savchenko and her sister Vira were stopped at Kyiv Boryspil airport after their Covid-19 vaccination certificates turned out to be fake.

Police have detained a man who threw a Molotov cocktail in the front yard of the house of a deputy head of the presidential office, Ihor Zhovkva. The detainee said he found such a job vacancy online and was promised 4,000 dollars.
