President of Latvia, Egils Levits, addressed in Ukrainian to the European leaders with an appeal to grant Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country.

The appeal was published by the Latvian television channel LTV.

“I support and encourage other European leaders to accelerate Ukraine’s path to the membership of the European Union by immediately granting it candidate status,” – said Egils Levits.

He expressed support to the Ukrainians in the fight against the Russian aggressor.

“Dear courageous people of Ukraine! My friend President Zelenskyy! All Latvian people are together with you – thoughts, actions, and prays. Together we will defeat Russian aggression and the Putin regime. Ukraine’s place is with us in Europe,” – said the Latvian President.

We remind that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed an application for membership in the European Union. The document was addressed to Emmanuel Macron, President of the EU’s Council, and copies – to Charles Michel, President of the European Council; Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and Roberta Mezoli, President of the European Parliament.

During the morning appeal to the citizens, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is calling for immediate accession to the EU by a new special procedure.

Just before, the Prime minister of Slovakia, Eduard Geger, proposed to accept Ukraine into the EU by a special procedure.
