Denmark is increasing its defense budget and gradually abandoning Russian gas, the country's prime minister said

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Sunday that Denmark would significantly increase its defense budget and try to become independent of Russian gas in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

This news was reported by Reuters.

The northern country will gradually increase its defense budget to reach 2% of GDP by 2033; it means an increase of annual defense budget of about 18bn danish krones ($ 2.65bn) according to an agreement between the main parliamentary parties.

Denmark, a NATO member, agreed in 2019 to increase the military budget from 1.35% of its economic output to 1.5% by 2023, but the United States pressured it to meet NATO's 2% target.
