The Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida announces that the southern Kuril Islands are a sovereign territory of his state, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda. This was said by Kishida during his speech in the Diet on 7 March.
He calls the southern part of the Kuril Islands “original territories of Japan”.
For Tokio, these islands have been a matter of dispute between Japan and the Russian Federation for a long time. Russia occupied the land of the southern Kuril Islands after World War II.
In recent years, the authorities of Japan have been refraining from the wording “original territories” when talking about the Kurils.
“The Northern Territories belong to Japan. They are the territory on which Japan has sovereignty,” the Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida announced today, on 7 March.
As a reminder, on 28 February, during the debates in the parliament of Japan, Hideki Uyama, the Japanese Foreign Ministry Department Director said that Russia had occupied the southern part of the Kuril Islands, and it contradicts international law, just as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
