Greek diplomat about Mariupol: What I saw, I hope no one will ever see

Greece’s Consul General, Manolis Androulakis, the last EU diplomat to evacuate the besieged Mariupol, said the city was joining the ranks of places known for having been destroyed in the wars. This was reported by Reuters

“What I saw, I hope no one will ever see,” – he said. “Mariupol will join the list of the cities completely destroyed by the war. I do not need to name them – they are Guernica, Coventry, Aleppo, Groznyy, Leningrad”.

Manolis Androulakis was helping the Greek citizens and ethnic Greeks to evacuate the city after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the Greek Foreign Ministry, Androulakis was the last EU diplomat to leave Mariupol.

Russian military forces caused a humanitarian catastrophe in Mariupol. The city is encircled, with thousands of residents killed by constant shelling and bombing. The Russians are impeding evacuations and the delivery of humanitarian aid. The city has no electricity and water supply.

On average, the Russian occupiers drop 50 to 100 air bombs a day on Mariupol.
