Zelensky Asked Pope Francis to Mediate in Unblocking Humanitarian Corridors

President Volodymyr Zelensky had a conversation with Pope Francis. The President of Ukraine thanked the Pontiff for his prayers for peace in Ukraine.

In addition, Zelensky asked the head of the Catholic Church to mediate the unblocking of the green corridors for the evacuation of civilians from the territories occupied by the Russian army.

"I spoke with @Pontifex. I told His Holiness about the difficult humanitarian situation and the blocking of rescue corridors by Russian troops. We would welcome the Holy See's mediating role in ending human suffering. I thanked him for praying for Ukraine and peace," Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Twitter.

Earlier the Pope called "barbaric" actions of Russians during a siege of Mariupol.

The next day after Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, the Pontiff personally arrived at the Russian embassy in the Vatican and called for an end to the war.

Last Sunday, 20 March, the pontiff reiterated his support for Ukraine and called on the world "not to get used to the war." Pope Francis wrote a tweet in Ukrainian. "Let us stand by this long-suffering people and embrace them with concrete efforts and prayer," he urged.

On 19 March, Pope Francis visited refugee children from Ukraine at the Vatican Hospital.
