The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will deploy its own monitoring missions at all Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including Chornobyl NPP, the head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, Oleh Korikov, has said at Ukraine Media Center.
According to him, the IAEA supported Ukraine's proposal to deploy international monitoring missions at all nuclear power plants. The missions will start their work in the nearest future.
Korikov also described the situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP temporarily occupied by Russians. He stressed that the occupiers' attempts to connect the plant to the Russian power system failed. At the same time, the occupation of the nuclear power plant poses a great nuclear danger.
"For example, the occupiers organized a base near the station to repair their equipment. All this is done right in front of the eyes of the IAEA experts, who record these actions but cannot prevent them in any way", Korikov noted.
Therefore, to prevent the nuclear threat from the Russian occupiers, Ukraine proposed to establish IAEA monitoring missions at all other Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
"This is necessary to strengthen nuclear safety in wartime. The IAEA agreed with our proposal, and in the near future these missions will be deployed at all nuclear power plants, including Chornobyl," he said.
The missions will monitor the security regime in war conditions and strikes on the energy system of Ukraine, which directly affect the operation of nuclear power plants.
