Japan today announced new sanctions against Russian companies and individuals, as well as trade restrictions, Reuters reports.

"On Friday, Japan announced additional sanctions in response to Moscow's latest actions in Ukraine, banning exports of key strategic goods to Russia and freezing the assets of Russian officials and entities,” the news agency notes.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Japan bans the supply of items that can be used to enhance military capabilities, including semiconductor equipment and components, gas exploration equipment, water cannons, robots, power generators, explosives, as well as vaccines and medical equipment, to 49 organizations in Russia.

The list included, among others, the aircraft manufacturer Irkut Corp and the surface-to-air missile maker Avangard, a Moscow-based plant.

The new export ban will take effect on 3 February.

In addition, Japan has frozen the assets of three other organizations and 22 Russians, as well as 14 "pro-Moscow individuals related to the "annexation" of the southeast region of Ukraine.

The sanctions were imposed, in particular, against Children's Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova, Head of the Russian Central Election Commission Ella Pamfilova, Deputy Prime Ministers Dmitriy Chernyshenko and Andriy Bilousov, and Deputy Defence Minister Mikhail Mizintsev.
