As early as 1 April, Russia will assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council, unless justice is done. Only Council members, not Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, can prevent Russian representative Vasiliy Nebenzya from assuming the presidency, Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsya, tweeted.

The current members of the Council's Presidium are, in particular, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Russia, Switzerland, the UAE and the United Kingdom, France, China, the United States, Brazil, and Ecuador.

Kislytsya wrote: “On the night of the Russian invasion, Antunio Guterres called it "the saddest day of his tenure" It will be the saddest day in UN history until 1 April 2023, when, unless justice prevails, the Russian Federation will assume the presidency of the Council. Stop violating justice and harassing the UN Charter!”

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine right during the UN meeting. During the year of the great war, the members of the Security Council never managed to get rid of Russia, which, after the collapse of the USSR, declared itself its successor. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia has the right to veto any of its decisions.

The presidency of the UN Security Council changes monthly in the order of the English alphabet. The Security Council is composed of 15 members (five permanent and 10 non-permanent).
