The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports that hostilities have intensified near the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Energoatom reports.
The company noted that the security situation around the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant has deteriorated. In particular, hostilities have intensified near the plant, and the number of Russian military personnel has increased.
“Over the past few weeks, there has been an increasing security presence at the site. Our team at the plant has reported increases in military action near the facility. There is an open discussion about offensives and counter-offensives in the vicinity of the site. My simple question is: are we waiting for a nuclear emergency before we react?” - IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi recently told the Agency's Board of Governors.
According to Grossi, the situation at Zaporizhzhya NPP underscores the urgent need to create a demilitarized zone around the plant. He also said that he had intensified consultations on this issue with both Ukraine and Russia.
Energoatom recently announced that the Russians are planning to remove some equipment from ZNPP. They are calculating possible scenarios for the withdrawal, the company said.
