The head of a military unit's department, who, together with an accomplice, embezzled 3.5 million hryvnyas in "combat" payments to non-existent soldiers, was sentenced in Dnipropetrovsk Region, the Prosecutor General's Office reported.
Following a public prosecution by the Specialised Defence Prosecutor's Office of the Eastern region, the head of the military unit's staff department was found guilty of misappropriation of property on a large scale (Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
He was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison with confiscation of property. He was also deprived of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for 2 years.
Prosecutors proved in court that the convict and his subordinate, having personal data of several citizens, falsely enrolled them in military service and included them in an order to pay money for alleged participation in hostilities.
The money was received on controlled bank accounts, appropriated and divided among themselves. In this way, they seized 3.5 million hryvnyas.
