The pollution of the Seim River is caused by a sewage discharge from a sugar factory in Tyotkino, Russia. The substances are organic, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said at the annual press conference.

The pollution has led to a drop in water levels and a fish kill in Ukraine. There are clearly defined response steps to counteract this, the Prime Minister said.

‘We understand how the pollution occurs: as a rule, it goes down the centre of the river. Some part of the river has been passed, and restoration processes have already taken place closer to the border. There are no threats to human life and health. There are no threats to the water intake of Chernihiv, to the Desna River and further on, to the Dnipro and Kyiv,’ the Prime Minister assured.

Organic pollution will be removed with activated sludge, and dead fish will be removed.
