Germany is looking for additional funds for Ukraine: the German Ministry of Defence has appealed to the government and parliament. It is about assistance both this year and next year, explained Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany Oleksiy Makeyev in an interview with LB.ua.
In August, the media reported that Berlin had frozen new applications for allocations and redistribution of aid to international programmes, as well as a reduction in aid from 2025. The ambassador said that the situation is not optimistic at the moment, but it is under control.
"The exact amount is not yet known. It depends on the support of political forces. The German Ministry of Defence has a very clear vision of how much Ukraine needs for repairs, training or other unforeseen things. The budget for this year has already been exhausted, so the German Ministry of Defence is appealing to the government and parliament: we need additional funds for this year and next year to continue supporting Ukraine," he said.
Makeyev explained that the work to raise funds for Ukraine is ongoing.
"What happened on the weekend of 17-18 August? Firstly, the federal government made the relevant explanations and all political forces said: well, of course, if necessary, let's consider it. The decision is made by both the parliament and the government," he said.
According to him, the German Ministry of Defence is well aware of Ukraine's needs and has a list of ready-made contracts in which Ukraine is asking for help with financing. So now work is underway to find additional funds.
- It was Germany, among the EU countries, that provided Ukraine with the largest military assistance during the full-scale war. However, due to the government's desire to cut budget expenditures, Berlin is seeking to redistribute the financial burden to other countries in the bloc.
