On 15 November, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation, Bloomberg reports.
The call was the first direct communication in almost two years.
The publication notes that there is growing uncertainty about support from Western allies before Donald Trump returns to the White House next year. Germany is Ukraine's second largest supporter after the US and has pledged billions of euros in additional aid.
Updated. The German government press service later released details of the conversation. Scholz condemned Russia's war against Ukraine and called on Putin to put an end to it and withdraw his troops. The chancellor also offered Russia to negotiate with Ukraine for a just and lasting peace and stressed Germany's ‘unwavering determination to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression for as long as necessary’.
The German government added that Scholz had previously spoken on the phone with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and after speaking with Putin, he would call the Ukrainian president again.
