Participants in the G20 summit in Brazil are set to agree to a softened communiqué on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, Bloomberg reports.

After Russia's latest massive attack on Ukraine, several Group of Seven countries asked for the position agreed in India in 2023 to be included in the communiqué. It was a call to stop destroying infrastructure during wartime.

However, this proposal was met with resistance from Brazil, which wants to avoid a situation where it will have to address other issues that different states would like to raise. Therefore, the proposal was dropped.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the G20 leaders are expected to ‘emphasise the human suffering and negative spillover effects’ of the war on global food and energy security, as well as on inflation. The statement welcomes ‘all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just and lasting peace’ based on the UN Charter.

However, the text of the communiqué may still change before the leaders sign it.
