Massive attack against Ukrainians: Air defence downs 81 out of 94 Russia-launched missiles

The Russians also fired drones. 

Russia launched another combined attack against Ukrainians. From 2 p.m. on 12 December to 10 a.m. on 13 December, the Russian military attacked with missiles of various types and attack drones.

A total of 287 Russian air attack vehicles — 94 missiles and 193 UAVs — were detected and escorted by the Air Force's radio engineering troops. These include:

  • Four X-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles from MiG-31K fighters, launch area - Tambov Region
  • Two Iskander-M ballistic missiles, launch area - Bryansk Region, TOT of Crimea
  • One KN-23 ballistic missile, launch area - Bryansk Region.
  • 55 X-101, X-55SM cruise missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers, launch area - Volgograd Region
  • 24 Kalibr cruise missiles, launch area - Black Sea;
  • Seven Iskander-K cruise missiles, launch area - Voronezh and Rostov Regions
  • One X-59/X-69 guided missile, launch area - airspace over the TOT of Luhansk Region
  • 193 Shahed-type attack UAVs and unidentified drones from Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Orel, Bryansk, and Millerovo.

"The air attack was repelled by anti-aircraft missile troops, aviation, electronic warfare units, mobile fire groups of the Air Force and the Defence Forces of Ukraine. The F-16s also worked effectively!" the Air Force commented. 

As of 11.30 a.m., the downing was confirmed:

  • 80 X-101/X-55SM/Kalibr/Iskander-K cruise missiles
  • One Iskander-M ballistic missile
  • 80 Shahed-type attack UAVs and unspecified drones. In addition, 105 Russian drones failed to reach their targets (lost in the area) due to active counteraction by the Defence Forces, five returned to Russia and one to Belarus.

"Once again, the enemy's missile and drone strike was mainly aimed at Ukraine's energy facilities," the military said.

The attack on 13 December

Air alert due to the missile threat for most regions began at around 7 o'clock. The Air Force warned of missile launches and Russian aircraft activity. The energy sector was again targeted, leading to an increase in blackouts and emergency shutdowns in Ukraine. 

It was one of the largest attacks on facilities in the Ivano-Frankivsk Region. Several missiles were also shot down in Transcarpathian Region. 

The impact of the attack is also evident in Kyiv, Ternopil and Lviv Regions.
