Ukraine has finalised its candidates for ambassador positions in Moldova and Belgium, with the selection process ongoing for Turkey, Greece, and Hungary, according to Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. Speaking at the New Country project’s Geopolitical Challenges and Prospects 2025 discussion, Sybiha emphasised that the absence of ambassadors does not hinder diplomatic efforts, as embassies continue to operate effectively.
Sybiha refrained from revealing names but noted that announcements could be made by year-end. He also did not confirm whether Oleksiy Danilov, former Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, would assume the role of ambassador to Moldova, despite earlier speculation by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ukraine is currently addressing the need to appoint or replace ambassadors in 30 countries. This effort prioritises the G7, G20, and neighbouring nations, as directed by President Zelenskyy in early November. Recent appointments include Vasyl Bodnar as ambassador to Poland and representatives to the OSCE and the IAEA.
Regarding the United States, Sybiha suggested that decisions are forthcoming, and G7 ambassador replacements will occur “if necessary.” The process is being expedited for strong candidates to reinforce Ukraine’s diplomatic presence.
