Russia has attacked nuclear energy facilities in recent missile strikes (the interview was recorded before today's attack - Ed.), according to Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. Speaking at the Geopolitical Challenges and Prospects 2025 discussion, Sybiha stressed that Ukraine urgently requires 20 additional air defence systems to protect strategic sites from further attacks.
The systems in demand include NASAMS, HAWK, and IRIS-T, which were a focal point during a recent meeting of NATO foreign ministers attended by Sybiha. “We very much hope for quick decisions to deliver these systems to Ukraine,” he said.
Following the strikes on nuclear power infrastructure, Ukraine immediately turned to the IAEA, convening a special meeting of the UN Security Council and initiating a session of the IAEA Board of Governors. The attacks prompted responses from the agency’s leadership.
Sybiha highlighted the importance of international support, particularly from the Group of Seven ministers, adding that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made air defence systems a top priority in his discussions with foreign leaders. “The most adequate response would be concrete decisions to supply these systems. We are actively working on this,” he noted.
