The Ombudsman's Office is aware of 177 confirmed cases of execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war by the Russian occupiers.
This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets in an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda, LIGA.net reports.
Lubinets noted that in 2024, the number of cases of shootings of Ukrainian defenders by Russians was almost twice as high as in the previous two years of full-scale war. Of the 177 confirmed cases of casualties, 109 occurred this year.
The Ombudsman's Office receives most of the videos of executions of Ukrainian servicemen from the special services. There are also cases when they are provided by military units.
The Ombudsman constantly informs the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN about alleged executions of Ukrainian military personnel, but the ICRC has never accused Russia of killing Ukrainian prisoners of war or torture.
At the same time, in 2024, UN reports for the first time revealed that Russians were executing Ukrainian defenders. In response to his appeal, the Russian side stated that it would ‘respond legally’ to these facts.
