The government has allocated over UAH 10 billion to strengthen the protection of the power system.

This was reported by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during a working visit to Zaporizhzhya Region. There, he inspected a power facility damaged by a Russian strike.

"To minimise damage, we are implementing projects to build protection systems around energy facilities. This is a priority task for each Region," said Denys Shmyhal, stressing that energy infrastructure is constantly under Russian shelling, and the frontline regions are particularly affected.

  • Russian military last attacked the Ukrainian energy sector on Christmas Day, 25 December. In total, since October 2022, Russia has carried out more than 1,000 strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities.
  • Prior to that, on 13 December, Russia tried to disconnect the power systems of Ukraine and Europe with an attack. At that time, the IAEA announced a reduction in the capacity of 5 Ukrainian power units
  • Ukrenergo has received €86 million from the European Investment Bank, which will be used to build anti-drone protection at key substations of the electricity transmission system.
  • Ukraine has also handed over a list of air defence systems needed to protect energy facilities to its partners.
