On 6 January, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party, CNN reports.

‘I intend to resign as party leader and as prime minister after the party elects a new leader,’ Trudeau told reporters at a press conference in Ottawa.

For now, the official will remain acting prime minister until a new leader is elected.

Trudeau also said that the Canadian parliament would be suspended until 24 March.

‘This morning, I informed the Governor General (Mary Simon represents the British monarch - Ed.) that we need a new session of Parliament. She granted this request and now the House will be suspended until 24 March,’ the Prime Minister added.

  • Last year in December, one of Justin Trudeau's former key allies, Jagmeet Singh, said he would initiate a vote of no confidence in the government in January.
  • Trudeau's Liberal Party is notoriously short of a majority in the House of Representatives, and has so far relied on Singh's party's votes to pass legislation and keep the government in place. Singh and Trudeau had a formal agreement to work together, but the NDP leader pulled out of the deal in September this year
  • The NDP leader also said he would run for prime minister in the next election.
