President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with rabbis, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and government officials, paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. This is stated in a message on the president's telegram channel.
"On 27 January, the world commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. It was a deliberate attempt by the Nazis to wipe out an entire nation — to kill all its people, to destroy everything that reminded them of Jews. Six million victims," it says.
Zelenskyy added that the crime of the Holocaust should never be repeated, but gradually, unfortunately, the memory of the Holocaust is becoming weaker. And the evil that tries to destroy the lives of entire peoples still remains in the world.
"We must all fight for the sake of life and not forget that indifference is fertiliser for evil. We must overcome the hatred that gives rise to abuse and murder. We must not allow forgetfulness. And this is the mission of everyone — to do everything to prevent evil from winning," the Head of State stressed.
- The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by the UN General Assembly in its resolution of 1 November 2005.
- The date of 27 January was not chosen by chance — it was on this day in 1945 that the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front liberated one of the largest Nazi concentration camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
- Ukraine joined the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2012.
