Ukraine is analysing US proposals for a minerals agreement for compliance with the Constitution, according to Suspilne, a statement by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. In response to questions from journalists of this publication, he said that the document should not contradict European integration.
One of the most renowned law firms will analyse the draft agreement. It will work in cooperation with the United States and help Ukraine.
Today, Kyiv and Washington will hold another round of online talks, but the Ukrainian delegation will travel to the United States for further negotiations in the near future.
- On 1 April, Sybiha announced the first round of talks. The government received the text of the US proposal on 28 March.
- The US Treasury Secretary recently announced that a Ukrainian delegation is expected in Washington next week to discuss the agreement.
New agreement on minerals
On 26 March, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, citing his own sources, published details of the US proposal for a minerals agreement. The document contained proposals that, in the MP's opinion, were unfavourable to Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy said that the US had decided to change the rules and now, instead of a framework agreement, they wanted a full agreement. Later, he clarified that the version received by the President's Office was different from the document received by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The government confirmed the receipt of the new document, but noted that it was a working version and that Ukraine would formulate its own proposals.
The framework agreement, which envisaged the creation of a joint investment fund, was supposed to be signed back in February. However, after a quarrel in the Oval Office, Washington did not return to the issue of signing.
