Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyy awarded soldiers who distinguished themselves during the Kursk operation during a working visit.
This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Syrskyy stressed that this operation, which has been ongoing for nine months, has achieved most of its objectives.
“Thanks to our active actions in Kursk Region, we managed to prevent the Russian offensive campaign in Sumy and Kharkiv Regions,” the Commander-in-Chief noted.
The buffer zone created by the Defence Forces in the border areas remains relevant today.
“A numerically superior Russian military can only be defeated by non-standard moves. The Kursk operation was exactly that. It was a surprise for the Russians. Ukraine has shown that it is capable of counterattacking, beating and driving the Russians back – including on their own soil. This became possible thanks to specific military units, specific soldiers – real heroes of the Ukrainian army,” said Syrskyy.
The 225th Separate Assault Regiment is one of the units that has effectively completed its assigned tasks in Kursk Region. The Commander-in-Chief spoke to the soldiers and presented them with state and departmental combat awards for exemplary steadfastness, courage and heroism.
The Kursk operation
Since the beginning of the Kursk operation – that is, since 6 August last year – the Russian army’s losses there have amounted to 62,400 soldiers. Of these, 25,200 were irretrievable, and 36,200 were sanitary casualties. Another 983 soldiers of the Russian army were captured.
In March, President Zelensky said that in Kursk Region, Ukrainian soldiers were doing “everything possible and impossible” to hold back the Russian offensive in Sumy Region. LB.ua’s source in the Armed Forces Command also reported that the Russians had planned an offensive against Zaporizhzhya in late October and early November, concentrated significant forces in that area – but were forced to abandon the plans.
On 26 April, the General Staff denied Russia’s claim that the fighting in Kursk Region had ended.
